Going Places: Photographers Who Travel
February 3- March 4, 2010
Artist Reception:
February 3rd, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Taking
holiday snapshots is a tradition as old as the camera, and
the results are often only of interest to those who were on
the trip. But what happens when photographers travel?
“Going Places: Photographers Who Travel” looks at four Bay
Area photographers who have taken their passion for
photography on the road. Steve Bird, Monica Denevan, Pat
Mazzera, and Nicholas Pavloff are all working photographers,
and each has made travel an important component of their
photographic practice. Their methods of working range from
hand-printed, black and white photographs to large-scale,
computer-manipulated digital photographs. The results are
compelling works of art that transport the viewer to distant
lands through the craft and vision of the photographer.
Steve Bird digitally splices together numerous shots to
create 180 degree or greater panoramic photographs of scenes
from all over the world, such as the Paris Underground and
the Nagoya Dome in Japan. With his 360 degree panoramic
photograph of the view from atop one of the World Trade
Center towers, Bird takes his viewers to a place that can be
visited in no other way. Over the past ten years, Monica
Denevan has traveled regularly to the remote Irradwaddy
River in Burma to photograph the local people and their
environment. Using traditional printing methods, she creates
luscious black and white photographs that reveal the strong
bond she has developed between herself and her subjects. Pat
Mazzera is an editorial photographer who took a
point-and-shoot digital camera with her on a trip to Brazil.
The results are vivid, eye-opening photographs that capture
Brazil in all its beauty and complexity. Nicholas Pavloff
has traveled throughout Asia and Europe to create a body of
carefully printed black and white photographs, each of which
offers a signature vision of the place in which they were
taken.
An opening reception for the artists is scheduled from
6:30-8:30 PM on Wednesday, February 3, 2010. The public is
invited to attend. The reception and the exhibition will
take place at Los Medanos College Art Gallery, located in
the Library building at Los Medanos College, 2700 East
Leland Road, in Pittsburg, California.
